DomainSherpa Portfolio Review – August 29, 2013

In this premiere DomainSherpa Review, we get into the minds of successful domain name investors — people we call Sherpas — and review specific domain name lists or portfolios. By listening to the Sherpas, we expand our thought process so we can become more successful investors ourselves.

For multiple domain name lists and portfolios, the Sherpas answer:

  • Which domains are valuable, and in what way?
  • What is the market value (both wholesale and retail) of the best domain names?
  • Which domains are worthless and should be dropped?
  • Which domain names may invite legal issues, such as a UDRP case or cybersquatting lawsuit?
  • Which domains deserve marketing efforts to sell?
  • Which specialized broker should you contact to sell a specific domain name?

  1. Derek says:

Really great show. Valuable advice given by experts and hosted by one of the worlds leading domain gurus. Thanks Michael and keep up the good work.

  2. Boluji says:

I want to appeal and join the idea of grouping some individual domains for review as one portfolio in other to enable some domainers who are having very few domains to enjoy from this good work.

    Thanks in advanced.

  3. Boluji says:

I want to appeal and join the idea of grouping some individual domains for valuation as one portfolio, this will enable some domainers who are having few domains to enjoy from this good work.
    Thanks in advanced

  4. Kevin Davis says:

That was awesome and this is a must see show.

  5. I do agree with Rick, there is not a single domain sold on SEDO last week, except wheelcovers.com that is worth so much. How people raised the price bar of other names, I cannot think of. IMO.

  6. I love Michael’s way of interviewing great people like Rick and others who spoke on how they were successful on domains. He never stops asking questions unless and until finds doubts cleared that helps the readers get the full picture many others never did it before like Michael.
Good Luck Miachael for attending T.R.A.F.F.I.C live. We will await your delivery.

  7. Kassey says:

Excellent idea! Please continue. Only one suggestion. Please sort the lists so we can find the names easily while listening to the comments. Thanks Michael.

    1. Great suggestion, Kassey. We’ll organize in alphabetical order from this point forward.

  8. Jeroen says:

Thanks to you and the sherpas for taking the time and effort to put this great video together and making it publicly available.

  9. Joe Alagna says:

    Hi Michael,

    Great show. Thanks for sharing.

  10. Steve Jones says:

Great idea Michael and well done everyone!

It’s hard to overstate the value of hearing industry experts’ banter about evaluating specific domains and overall domain evaluation. I think this kind of format is incredibly useful to beginners or even folks who’ve been involved with domains for a long time but are perhaps finding it more difficult these days to achieve the same success. There were great points made all around.

Looking forward to more of these!

  11. Bill McClure says:

Michael, this is what happens when you put savvy outspoken domain investors on stage in a live discussion together. We all got useful take aways and learned new tips directly from this sherpa event. Each of these men strive to work closely with new and old domainers working to improve our industry. I say thank you and Good Job. See you guys at Traffic. Bill Mac

  12. Boluji says:

This is more than just a blog; it is a high College room for Domainers.
Thanks to you all Gurus and beginners Domainers

  13. Vikash Bakrewala says:

Hey Michael, amazing work bringing out the sherpas for all of us, I am sure the minor technical glitches will be taken care of.Looking forward to a lot more of this.

  14. Homero A. Gonzalez says:

Excellent Format!, Excellent Show, Excellent Sherpas and Excellent Moderator. Need I say more?

I have a comment and it is the fact that I noticed that nobody in the panel speaks Spanish and there were two domains, one in the portfolio alpormayor.com and
another in the Sedo list of domain names sold. CrucerosBaratos.com that the panelists apparently did not understand.

Cruceros=Cruises, Baratos=Cheap so the domain is CheapCruises.com and this is not
a bad domain at all. In fact, I think it is pretty good, and a steal for 10K.

Al por Mayor means; Wholesale, you can also say Al Mayor, vs al detal o detal=retail
By no means a bad domain either.

Just an observation for the benefits of the readers/viewers of DomainSherpa.

Thank you Michael, and all the Sherpas! Cannot wait to watch the next one!!

  15. I really enjoyed the show Michael, thanks for the great job…

  16. Stephen Douglas says:

    Go Michael, go!

  17. Mitch says:

To have Michael, Page, and Rick critique my portfolio, PRICELESS!

I publicly want to thank you guys, and thank you Michael.

  18. DrDomainer says:

Wish the domain industry had a sherpa show like this when I first started years ago
would of saved me a lot of money. I had to learn the hard way :) domain industry is going to change forever very soon so it’s great for the newbies to learn from the cream of the crop.

Love to watch a show talking about future trend domains.

  19. Joao says:

For people that still think Traffic is expensive, this is just a sample (and i really mean SAMPLE) of what happens at Traffic. It was the best thing i have ever done in my entire domaining life and believe me, for a portuguese guy it is not cheap at all to go there, but it is also priceless…so GO!

    Great show!

  20. Excellent job, Michael. You are a fast yet clear talker. Very enjoyable to watch and of course very informative.

    Greetings from the Netherlands!

  21. Greetings says:

Very useful review from experts. Would such video be weekly?

  22. Bill Kara says:

Really neat format, creative as always and great insights from everyone that took part. Its nice to see how top down, bottom up this industry is.

Hope to see a show with Frank Schilling, Dr. Harnett, Theo Develegas and Andrew Rosener. That would be an interesting one!

  23. Kudos for getting several industry heavyweights participating in the same videoblog post. Keep up the good work!

  24. Adam says:

Next time everyone wears headsets. :)

  25. Tia Wood says:

I really appreciate this format – hearing from multiple people in video. How about discussing domain related news in addition to valuation? Friendly debates? There is so much information delivery lacking in this industry. I like the way Rick Schwartz described his measures for domain quality and “where the bar is” at minute 10:45. Bingo Bongo!

  26. Paul Stahura says:

I like the panel format. Great exchange of ideas/viewpoints. Interesting discussion. Thanks.

  27. ehab says:

Thank you Mike for another great interview, and thanks to all your fantastic guests. Everytime I watch an interview here, I honestly learn many new things :-)
Thank you, I would love to see this ” review ” continue

  28. Robert Bury says:

I really liked this review!!! Thank You for putting this together. The content you are providing is really awesome!!!

I know this was a trial run and minus the initial audio issue, I thought it was outstanding. So many varying opinions & perspectives and some commonalities too… great stuff.

I would have loved to hear more on actual valuation techniques and examples. I realize it’s all industry specific and often it’s what the buyer will pay but as successful as this group is… I’m sure they have some great advice / techniques for valuing and selling domains.

I realize putting ones self out there opens yourself up but I would love to see some discussion / refining on a domain valuation technique that is generally reliable.

I just created a system for evaluating & explaining a siding industry domain name and feel that it could be used for other industries as well. I’d love to get some constructive feedback.
I really tried to illustrate the market for each domain to show value, then I did a Comparative Market Analysis (like they do in Real Estate) to find a common range and settle on usable common denominators. I’m curious if anyone else is using a technique like this.
Here’s an example of my Current Market Method (CMM):
    https://www.drivingdesigns.com/domain-market-value/?domain=sidingcolors.com

Thanks again Michael for DomainSherpa.com and all of your obvious hard work!!!

  29. abc says:

    Very practical interview.
I see on one list co domain (its not great). I am curious about top .co`s and maybe some premium LLL.co`. Are they worth investing? It would be great to know what those leaders think about it? Some of those guys had .co`s in the past (I am not sure now).

    1. Thanks for commenting, ABC.

I believe Mike Berkens discussed his company’s portfolio around the TLDs other than .com. I suggest you look for the section (sorry there’s no way to link directly to it at this time) where he talks about upgrading…only keeping the better single word domains in TLDs other than .com.

If I’m not remembering correctly and it was another Sherpa that made that comment, someone please post a follow-up comment.

      1. Sorry, it was Page that said the comment about upgrading. Zoom to 26:30 for that discussion.

      2. Robert K. says:

        Hi Michael,

Is there a chance to have the portfolio list evaluation by your guests for me too ? If yes , where it should be sent ?

        thanks for the info

        Robert

  30. Tracey V. says:

This is the coolest show on TV or Internet! I’d watch it on my big screen or on my computer. I want more!

Love the host, love the guests, love the format, love the content. More, more, more.

    Thanks so much, Sherpas!

    1. Ahhh, thanks Tracey. Very kind of you. Thanks for commenting.

  31. Loved it. Very well done and insightful.

    1. Thanks for taking a moment to comment and provide your thoughts, Vincent.

  32. Donna Mahony says:

I really enjoyed the sherpas today! Good show…lightening round and registered or available were my favs!

    1. Thanks for watching and commenting, Donna. I like to know what everyone’s favorite part was. :)

  33. Dan says:

    Very interesting!

If you do business online, there’s no excuse for not being in some sort of chat room where you can bounce ideas around, compare prices, vet service providers, and share contacts.

I think Skype’s the best for this. And it doesn’t need to be a massive chat room either. I chat with just two trusted associates. Here, Michael talks to five.

    1. Dan says:

      Whoops! Four not five.

    2. Great point, Dan. I fully agree.

  34. Viljami says:

I really hope this makes into a series. Such a great idea. Thanks!

    1. Thanks for your comment, Viljami.

  35. Scott Smith says:

    Heyo,

Great first time effort for a format that I’m sure will be well received. The minor glitches will be corrected and I’m positive that future such editions will be winners.

A huge thanks to the Sherpa’s for contributing their time and expertise.

    Cheers,

    Scott

    1. Thanks, Scott. Hope to see you at TRAFFIC in October. It’s been a while!

  36. John Harrison says:

    Hey Michael

I loved this! So many Sherpas…who’s guiding who?

Obviously I would like the whole thing tripled in length- I also know why this probably can’t happen.

The portfolio review was particularly helpful. Getting insight in the valuations and hearing the differences between marketing a name and waiting for the market to come to you. I don’t think a name can be precisely valued as we can see from some of the Sedo sales. Give that to the sherpas as a portfolio and it would very likely not reach the values these names sold at. But to hear ‘order of magnitudes’ (my favourite Cygerism) from the panel is very interesting.

Technical issues aside I think it would be well worth repeating!

    1. Thanks, John.

It’s funny, most people that provide input on the main (Monday) show say that it’s just too long for them. So I wanted to keep this show to 30 minutes or less. Obviously, we missed that by about 12 minutes out of the gate. :)

I appreciate you taking the time to write a comment and share your thoughts.

  37. TYP0 says:

    typ0 d0mains is where the $$$ is. there is n0 where else t0 g0. all of the d0tc0ms are taken. and s0 are the typ0s. example p0rn.com p0rn.net p0rn.org. p0rn.co.uk

    1. Robert K. says:

there is n0 where else t0 g0 – I would not agree here , even in dot com – there is a space in new technology devices coming on market in the future. Like it TV industry , now we will have Oled era and later the AMOLED TV era.
So it is not closed completely even in com space .

      my 2 cents

      Robert

  38. WOW! Impressive line-up of reviewers. And a great service. I’m sure glad we voted you domain blog of the year, Cyger! May you blog for a hundred years!

    1. Thanks, Domenclature. Your support is appreciated. Thanks for taking a moment to comment.
