The rigorous process requires applicants to spend $185,000 to complete a lengthy form that will prevent cybersquatters and can take 18 months for approval. While some critics say switching to or adding on a corporate domain, such as .ibm or .mcdonalds, is unnecessary and probably unlikely for big-name brands, municipalities could reap marquee display and extra cash.

Go Daddy Gets Gripe Site NoDaddy.com

NoDaddy.com was set up as a gripe site after the domain registrar suspended the registration of security mailing list SecLists.org. Since then it has been a gathering place for customers and ex-employees of the world’s largest registrar.

When Amazon.com announced its music-anywhere service and corresponding Cloud Player a few months ago, it was missing a key ingredient — the domain name CloudPlayer.com. It has belatedly fixed that problem. On July 11 the whois record for CloudPlayer.com transferred to Amazon.

News International Now Controls Sun On Sunday Domain Names
July 11, 2011 @ 10:52 PMShortly after News International Chairman James Murdoch announced the abrupt closure of the News of the World in response to the ongoing phone-hacking scandal on Thursday, it was revealed that a company called Mediaspring had registered the domain names thesunonsunday.co.uk and sunonsunday.co.uk two days earlier. So speculation grew that a Sunday edition of the Sun could essentially replace News of the World, the best-selling Sunday paper in the U.K.

Stephen Crocker, one of the Internet’s founding architects and recently named Chairman of the Board of the international coordinating authority for domain names, ICANN, will present the keynote speech at the upcoming “newdomains.org – The Munich Conference on new TLDs” meeting. His speech on September 26th will mark the kick-off of the two-day international conference. The event, which will bring experts in the fields of technology, trademark law and business from around the world to Munich, will serve as a platform for discussions centering on ICANN’s newly adopted program for the introduction of new top-level domain extensions.
